As to the third they are mocked, because people speak of them as they would sing; hence he says, "You have made us a byword among the nations." When evil is inflicted on someone, it becomes a proverb, and people say: may the same happen to you as happened to such a person. And thus one who is mistreated is made a reproach. Perhaps some said: may the same happen to you as to Lawrence and the others. And therefore he says, "You have made us a byword among the nations," that is, as an example of evil and reproach. …
