Passing over is an endeavor: the endeavor to pass from the study of the sciences to the study of holiness and from the study of holiness to that of wisdom. It is said of this in the Psalm: "Teach me goodness and discipline and knowledge." The endeavor begins from the top because it wants to "taste and see how good the Lord is." But it is not possible to reach wisdom except through discipline, nor discipline except through knowledge — wherefore the last should not be placed before the first. …
