What the Fathers say

Isaiah 29:7

Western Saints

Thomas Aquinas

656. And the multitude of all nations that have fought against Ariel, shall be as the dream. Here he adds some consolation from the punishment of the enemy, for like a vain thing, they will go into nothing, not carrying back anything advantageous from the destruction of Judea, just as someone hungry or thirsty gets nothing from food or drink he dreams of: the hopes of a man that is void of understanding are vain and deceitful: and dreams lift up fools (Sir 34:1); I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone to all people (Zech 12:3).
