What the Fathers say
Western Saints
Jerome
And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years, Tyre shall sing as a harlot. Take a harp, go about the city, O harlot that has been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that you may be remembered. After seventy years, the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall return to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth. …
Thomas Aquinas
And it shall come to pass. Here he designates the time: seventy years, according to the days of one king, who rarely even lives so long, below: the Lord has forsaken me, and the Lord has forgotten me (Isa 49:14). But after seventy years. Here he promises liberation. And first, he sets out the song of the liberated, setting out the time of singing: after seventy years; as the song of a harlot, who, cast aside by a man, throws herself about and moves the hearts of others to mercy through songs in which she remembers her former dignity.
