Observe Peter from the first standing aloof from the affair, and even to this time judaizing. And yet he says "ye know." Perhaps those were present who of old found fault with him in the matter of Cornelius, and went in with him on that occasion: for this reason he brings them forward as witnesses. "From old days," he says, "did choose among you." What means, "Among you?" Either, in Palestine, or, you being present. "By my mouth." Observe how he shows that it was God speaking by him, and no human utterance. …

Notice: the grace to resolve the question is received by Peter, in whom even until now there remained elements of Judaism. "You," he says, "know." Perhaps those who had once accused him on account of Cornelius were present here, and perhaps also those who had entered with him into the house of Cornelius, and that is why he calls them as witnesses. What does the expression "chose from among us" mean? …

Perhaps those who accused him earlier regarding Cornelius were present, and having entered with him, therefore they produce them as witnesses. But what is meant by "God chose to make"? That is, choosing among us while we are present in Palestine. [CHRYSOSTOM]
