What the Fathers say

Acts 13:52

Eastern Fathers

John Chrysostom

"And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost," for the suffering of the teacher does not check his boldness, but makes the disciple more courageous.

Homily on Acts 30 ↗

Theophylact of Ohrid

"And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit." The teachers were being persecuted, yet they rejoiced: such is the power of the Gospel. The suffering of the teacher does not take away boldness from the disciple, but makes him more courageous.

Western Saints

Bede

And the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. In the Greek it is: "But the disciples," so that we may understand, while the Jews were persecuting the faith, the disciples were enriched in contrast with spiritual joy.
