As to the second he says, "At the voice of one who reproaches." Reproach is when a taunt is cast in someone's face. Ps. 102: "All the day they reproached me," etc. Slander is a secret detraction. Eccl. 10: "If a serpent bites in silence, it is no less than one who secretly slanders." Thus it was done to the saints in the time of persecution; for Maximus had wicked women seized and made them confess that Christians had committed evil deeds with them. …
