Then the mockery by the rulers follows: "in like manner also the chief priests, mocking etc." Hence not only the people, but the rulers mocked him. A man is not greatly distressed if he is condemned by the lowly, but he cannot bear the derision of the great. For man naturally desires to be honored, and honor is rendered as a testimony of virtue; hence derision is done for reproach. And these are described by their authority, because they were rulers. Likewise, by their learning, because they were Scribes. …
