What the Fathers say

1 Corinthians 1:30

Eastern Fathers

John Chrysostom

"But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who was made unto us wisdom from God, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption." The expression "of Him," I suppose he uses here, not of our introduction into being, but with reference to the faith: that is, to our having become children of God, "not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh." Theophylact of Ohrid

"But of Him you are in Christ Jesus." The words "of Him" understand not as referring to being brought into existence in general, but into a better existence. He says: You have been called not by the great of this world but by the lowly; consequently, your conversion should not be attributed to men but to God. …

Bernard of Clairvaux

Of course this devotion to the humanity of Christ is a gift, a great gift of the Spirit. Christ is truly all these things. …
