So then, receive them, but approach them with fear, that is, with caution, and combine mercy toward them with hatred for their vile deeds; even toward the garment defiled by their flesh, have loathing and aversion, because through contact with the flesh it itself becomes defiled. Or: receiving them, by the fear of future punishment prepare them so that they may repent and prove worthy of mercy. The defiled garment is a life defiled by many transgressions as a result of fleshly passion. …

Hating even the garment stained by the flesh. By "garment of the flesh" he means our body. However, we should not hate our body, but we should hate this stained condition in every way, and as much as we can act to make it spotless, so that what is carnal may deserve to become spiritual. Since this is not achieved by our own will, but must be accomplished by the grace of God, it is rightly added:
