Above he said that he did not come to them because he did not have authority over himself and was not permitted by the Spirit. How then does he now say that he did not come in order to spare them? Because either this very thing happened by the will of the Spirit, that is, the Spirit suggested to him the thought of not going in order to spare them, or — at first the Spirit forbade him, and then he himself, having reasoned that this was better, remained.
